  7.     rn - new read news program

  9. SYNOPSIS

  12. DESCRIPTION
  13.     All  the newsgroups which have unread news are displayed, and
  14.     then  the user is asked for each one whether he wants to read
  15.     it, in the order in which the newsgroups occur in the .newsrc
  16.     file.
  17.  
  18.     Rn  operates on three levels:  the newsgroup selection level,
  19.     the  article  selection  level,  and  the paging level.  Each
  20.     level has its own set of commands, and its own help menu.  At
  21.     the paging level (the bottom level), rn behaves much like the
  22.     more  program.   At  the  article  selection  level,  you may
  23.     specify  which  article  you  want  next, or read them in the
  24.     default  order,  which  is either in order of arrival on your
  25.     system,  or  by  subject threads.  At the newsgroup selection
  26.     level  (the  top  level), you may specify which newsgroup you
  27.     want  next,  or  read them in the default order, which is the
  28.     order  that  the  newsgroups occur in your .newsrc file.  You
  29.     can  also  change  setting  with  the  e-command and sort the
  30.     groups alphabetically.

  32.     On  any  level, at ANY prompt, an 'h' may be typed for a list
  33.     of  available  commands.  This is probably the most important
  34.     command to remember, so don't you forget it.  Typing space to
  35.     any  question means to do the normal thing.  Carriage returns
  36.     should  not  be  typed  to  terminate anything except certain
  37.     commands.   Those  commands will be obvious in the discussion
  38.     below because they ask for an argument.)

  40.     Upon startup, rn will do several things:
  41.  
  42.     1. It  will look for your .newsrc file, which is your list of
  43.        newsgroups.   If  rn doesn't find a newsrc, it will create
  44.        one.
  45.  
  46.     2. Rn  will  see if you have a .rnprefs file.  If there isn't
  47.        one, it will be created with default settings according to
  48.        the term-variable.
  49.  
  50.     3. Rn  will next check to see if any new newsgroups have been
  51.        created, and add them to your .newsrc.
  52.  
  53.     4. Rn  will  check  to  see  if any of the newsgroups in your
  54.        newsrc are removed from the system and will remove them.
  55.  
  56.     5. It  will check the groups for unread articles, listing out
  57.        the first several newsgroups with unread news.
  58.  
  59.     6. Rn goes into the top prompt level--the newsgroup selection
  60.        level.

  62.     Newsgroup Selection Level
  63.  
  64.     In  this section the words "next" and "previous" refer to the
  65.     ordering  of  the  newsgroups  in  your .newsrc file.  On the
  66.     newsgroup selection level, the prompt looks like this:

  72.     q    Quit Readnews.

  74.     n    Go to the next newsgroup with unread news.

  76.     N    Go to the next newsgroup.

  78.     p    Go to the previous newsgroup with unread  news.
  79.  
  80.     P    Go to the previous newsgroup.
  81.  
  82.     g    Go to newsgroup.  If the entered group isn't currently
  83.         subscribed to, it will be resubscribed.

  85.     y,SP    Do this newsgroup now.
  86.  
  87.     l    Lists the current state of the .newsrc,  along  with
  88.         status information.

  90.         Status        Meaning
  91.         <number>    Count of unread articles
  92.         READ        No unread articles
  93.  
  94.     s    Sort the groups alphabetically.
  95.  
  96.     G    Grab - collect messages to a file
  97.  
  98.     e    Edit settings, colors etc.
  99.  
  100.     a    Add new newsgroup. This command is allowed only to
  101.         privileged and superuser level users.

  103.     r    Remove newsgroups. Allowed only to superuser level.
  104.  
  105.     These  commands  may  also  be given from the group selection
  106.     level, but are actually executed in article selection level.
  107.  
  108.     c       Catch up - mark all unread articles in this newsgroup
  109.         as read.
  110.  
  111.     o    Mark articles read, except newest ones (user is asked)
  112.  
  113.     u    Unsubscribe from current newsgroup.
  114.  
  115.     =    List subjects before displaying articles.

  118.     Editing settings
  119.  
  120.     You need at least 22 rows on your terminal to enter the prefs
  121.     editor.   The  editor  will  display all available ansi color
  122.     combinations  and  VT100  graphic  modes.   You  can move the
  123.     asterix  up  and  down  using  the cursor keys.  To change an
  124.     entry,  press  return  or  "e".   You will be prompted with a
  125.     "Select a definition".  Now press the appropriate symbol that
  126.     is   displayed  appropriately.   For  example,  if  you  want
  127.     italics, push "+", or if you want colors, pick an alphabet ..
  128.  
  129.     There is also on/off selections, you can select full headers,
  130.     or just add Date:  and Organization:  lines.  Quoted text can
  131.     also  be  hidden,  but  I  admit that it is not really a very
  132.     useful option. Press q to return to the main level.

  135.     Article Selection Level
  136.  
  137.     On  the  article  selection  level,  rn  selects (by default)
  138.     unread  articles  in  numerical  order  (the  order  in which
  139.     articles have arrived at your site).
  140.  
  141.     On  the article selection level you are not asked whether you
  142.     want  to  read  an  article  before the article is displayed;
  143.     rather,  rn  simply  displays the first page (or portion of a
  144.     page,  at low baud rates) of the article and asks if you want
  145.     to  continue.   The  normal article selection prompt comes at
  146.     the END of the article (though article selection commands can
  147.     be  given  from  within  the middle of the article (the pager
  148.     level) also).  The prompt at the end of an article looks like
  149.     this:

  153.     The following are the options at this point:

  155.     n,SP    Scan forward for next unread  article.
  156.  
  157.     n    Go to the next unread article.
  158.  
  159.     p    Go to the previous unread article.

  161.     N    Go to the next article.

  163.     P    Go to the previous article.
  164.  
  165.     ^n    Go to the next unread article with the same subject.
  166.  
  167.     ^p    Go to the previous unread article w/ the same subject.
  168.  
  169.     ^r    Restart the current article.
  170.  
  171.     ^x    Restart in rot-13 mode
  172.  
  173.     q    Quit this newsgroup and go  back  to  the  newsgroup
  174.         selection level.

  176.     num    Go to the numbered article.
  177.  
  178.     k    Mark as read all articles with the same  subject  as
  179.         the  current  article.

  181.     r    Reply through netmail.
  182.  
  183.     R    Reply through netmail and include the original article.

  185.     ^f    Submit a new article.

  187.     f    Submit a followup  article.

  189.     F    Submit   a   followup  article , and include the old
  190.         article, with lines prefixed by ">".  Rn will attempt
  191.         to provide an attribution line in front of the quoted
  192.         article,  generated  from  the  From:   line  of  the
  193.         article.   Unfortunately,  the  From:   line  doesn't
  194.         always  contain  the  right  name;  you should double
  195.         check  it  against  the  signature  and  change it if
  196.         necessary,  or  you may have to apologize for quoting
  197.         the wrong person.

  199.     c    Catch up in this newsgroup; i.e.,mark all articles as
  200.         read.
  201.  
  202.     o    Only: mark all articles as read and then the specified
  203.         number of newest articles as unread.
  204.  
  205.     u    Unsubscribe to this newsgroup.

  207.     s destination
  208.         Save  to  a  filename.   After  generating  the  full
  209.         pathname of the file to save to, rn determines if the
  210.         file exists already, and if so, appends to it.
  211.         Files are saved to a News-subdirectory.

  213.     =    List subjects of unread articles.

  216.     Pager Level
  217.  
  218.     At the pager level (within an  article),  the  prompt  looks
  219.     like this:

  227.     d    Display half a page more.

  229.     CR    Display one more line.

  231.     q    Go to the end of the current article. Leaves you at the
  232.         "What next?" prompt.

  234.     .    Display the rest of the article without pausing.

  237.     Miscellaneous facts about commands
  238.  
  239.     An 'n' typed at either the  "Last  newsgroup"  prompt  or  a
  240.     "Last  article"  prompt  will  cycle  back to the top of the
  241.     newsgroup or article list,  whereas  a  'q'  will  quit  the
  242.     level.   (Note  that  'n'  does  not  mean  "no", but rather
  243.     "next".) A space will of course do whatever is shown as  the
  244.     default,  which will vary depending on whether rn thinks you
  245.     have more articles or newsgroups to read.

  250.     Rn can also be used with UUCP and CNews news systems, when
